False University Professor jailed

Koforidua, July 29, GNA – Togbe Kwame Settor, 64, who posed as a university professor and collected GHC 12,000 from an applicant seeking admission to the University of Ghana Business School, was on Thursday sentenced to 12 months imprisonment in hard labour by the Koforidua Circuit Court ‘A’.

He pleaded guilty with explanation for defrauding by false pretences.

Police Inspector Twum Frimpong told the court that the complainant, Nana Abrah Koranteng, a customs Officer, applied to pursue his Masters in Business Administration (MBA).

The prosecutor said while he was waiting for his admission, he met Togbe Settor at Ogua Secretarial College in Koforidua when he went to visit the proprietor who is his friend.

During conversation the convict introduced himself to the complainant as a Professor who lectured at the university.

Nana Koranteng told Togbe Settor of his intention to pursue his MBA course at the Business School.

The prosecutor said the convict convinced him he could arrange for him to pursue the course as a non-fee paying student, a facility given to children of professors at the university.

He told him he had some friends who sat on the board for selection of the non-fee paying students and would need some money to entertain them and collected GHC 12,000 from her.

In October 2008 when the complainant detected that admissions had been made and the MBA students were in school he tried to contact the convict but to no avail.

In May 2010 the complainant had information that the convict had been arrested at the Koforidua police station for allegedly defrauding a woman of GHC 17,450 at Oyoko.

The complainant then went to the police station and identified Togbe Settor as the one who defrauded him.
