A 39-year-old lady who posed as a police officer and swindled a pensioner of his GH¢2,500.00 under the guise of securing a visa for his son to travel to Canada has been remanded into prison custody by a Kumasi Circuit Court.
Nancy Opoku is facing charges of conspiracy, defrauding by false pretences and falsely pretending to be a police officer.
She was ordered to return to the court on Tuesday, January 14, to answer for her alleged crime.
Her accomplice, mentioned as Ben Atta is, however, on the run.
Police Inspector Gulliver Tenkorang told the court presided over by Mr. William Boampong that the offence was committed in August 2012, when Nancy introduced herself to the victim, Ben Addo, as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) with the Narcotic Unit of the Kumasi Central Police Station.
Inspector Tenkorang said Nancy said she had been assisting to secure travel documents for members of her church at Asawase.
The prosecution said he fell for the bait and struck a deal with her to obtain a Canadian visa for his son, Rashid Kofi Amoakwa, and so the accused person demanded and was paid a fee of GH¢2,500.00.
Inspector Tenkorang said after collecting the money together with the passport of Amoakwa, Nancy went into hiding, but run out of luck on November 1 when she was found at a drinking spot at Asafo, and was apprehended.
She admitted the offence in her caution statement, the prosecution added.
