A National Highway Police Patrol team has arrested a 25-year-old suspected fake currency dealer Hafiz Abdulai Mohammed, a native of Tamale.
Hafiz was seen in possession of quantities of US Dollar and Ghanaian cedi notes in various denominations suspected to be fake currencies.
According to police information, the suspect is currently in the custody of the Nsawam Police assisting in investigations after which he would be prosecuted.
The suspected fake currencies found on him comprised 94 pieces of 100 US dollar notes, all with the same serial number: LB 21997022 C.
Other fake currencies found on him were 32 pieces of GH?50.00 notes with different serial numbers: EX 5644712, two notes; EC 3069059, four notes, YE 2889402, ten notes; YE 3748213, three notes; XD 4920213, four notes and XD 1056843, nine notes.
Currently, the Nsawam District Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has charged Hafiz for possession of forged currencies contrary to section 18 (1) of the Currency Act (242) of 1964.
The currencies are yet to be sent to the Bank of Ghana for verification and authentication.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Yaw Nketia-Yeboah, the Eastern Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, who briefed the Ghana News Agency (GNA), appealed to the public to continue to assist the police to fight crimes in the society.
He also cautioned them to endeavour to hand-over social miscreants to the Police instead of subjecting them to mob action which often led to death.
“Such behaviour kills investigations as suspects die with their leads that could have helped the Police,” he said.
