Fair Wages Commission should fix salary of President- Forum

Kodie (Ash), June 15, GNA – Participants at a Consultative Forum on the 1992 Constitution at Afigya-Kwabre, have expressed the need for the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, to be mandated to fix the remunerations of the Executive and the Legislature.

There was unanimity that the present arrangement which allows the executive to determine the salaries and allowances of the legislative and vice versa should be scrapped.

The participants comprised traditional leaders, assembly members, civil society organisations, political party representatives, personnel of the security services and heads of department.

Issues that came up for discussion bothered on the Executive, Legislature, Judiciary, Chieftaincy and the Local Government System. They recommended that any sitting President who cross-carpet to another party, should resign to pave way for fresh elections. They also demanded a ceiling on the number of judges appointed to the Supreme Court.

A member of the Constitutional Review Commission, Mr Akenten Appiah Menka dismissed rumours that the government had already taken a decision on what should be included and expunged from the constitution.

He said any review would be based on the collective will of Ghanaians and encouraged all to let their views and opinions be heard.

Mr Eric Delanyo Alifo, another member of the commission, said the exercise was non-partisan and asked the people to feel free to speak their minds. Mr Kwaku Oppong Kyekyeku Kaakyire, Afigya-Kwabre District Chief Executive, said it is the desire of the government to build national consciousness that would overcome socio-cultural, ethnic and political interests. 15 June 10
