Kumasi, May 20, GNA – A section of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) who had been agitating for the removal of the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Maxwell Kofi Jumah, have now decided to stop their agitations and work closely with him to promote peace and speedy development in the metropolis.
They have consequently decided to withdraw all petitions, motions and letter written to the President, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development and other institutions calling for the removal of the Chief Executive and pledged to refrain from organising such actions again.
Speaking at a meeting of the assembly in Kumasi on Thursday, the spokesman of the group, Nana Kofi Senya, assembly member for New Suame, said the decision by the group to withdraw all petitions was to promote peace and unity in the assembly to ensure speedy development in the metropolis.
In response, Mr Jumah said he was also prepared to withdraw the suit filed against the group from court if they really meant to refrain from scandalising him.
As a good gesture of unity, Mr Jumah announced the appointment of Nana Senya as member of his campaign team in a bid to contest the newly created Asokwa constituency seat in the metropolis.
It would be recalled that the group which included Mr Edward Akuamoah-Boateng, assembly member for Ahinsan, Gariba Ibrahim, Anloga, Frank Agyei Darko, Asokwa Extension and George Nsiah, Ash-Town, frequently called for a vote of no confidence in Mr Jumah to remove him from office for alleged incompetence and malpractices.
They had also sent several petitions to the President and the Minister of Local Government, accusing the Chief Executive of impropriety, mal-administration and corruption.
The situation had polarised the assembly and created tension among members over the years.
At the meeting itself, members of the assembly approved the 2004 fee fixing and budget of the assembly.
They also accepted a proposal of a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) policy of toilet facilities in the metropolis.
