The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), on Wednesday criticised the government’s plan to reduce the senior secondary school (SSS) programme to two and a half years in its attempt to adjust the academic calendar next year.
GNAT President, Mr Kwame Amo-Dako said at a press conference in Accra that the two and a half years would be woefully inadequate for teachers to complete the syllabus, let alone to give the students time to revise before sitting the examination.
He said GNAT still believes that the duration of the SSS programme should be extended from the current three years to four, adding that this would be in the general interest of the country.
“We are not interested in the quantity of students that we produce but the quality of students we prepare for the job market,” he said.
