Tema, Jan. 04, GNA – Residents of Tema Community Seven on Thursday expressed concern about excessive noise caused by drinking bar operators in the area and said it is affecting their health and properties.
The residents alleged that not only has the excessive noise contributed to the death of a resident but also vibrations have left cracks in some buildings.
This is contained in a petition they have sent to the Inspector General of Police and copied to the Tema Development Corporation, Tema Municipal Chief Executive and Environmental Protection Agency. Mr Eric Asante, Secretary of the Community Seven Residents Union, signed the petition.
They said the resident, who died two years ago was an asthmatic patient, was allergic to noise and after a carnival organised in the area he had a crisis and taken to hospital but died.
The residents said operators of the drinking spots and clubs in the area play their music very loud.” The noise gets worse in the evenings and on week-ends where some group organise carnivals on the streets.” They mentioned the worst offending drinking spots as “Bee Gees”, Sun Set Beam” and “Salita Spot.”
This practice, they said, has encouraged socials vices in the area as many young people from other areas troop to Community Seven and indulge in prostitution and robbery.
They said all these vices are carried out in the full glare of the police who live in barracks in the community.
The residents said though the operators have the right to make their money, it should not be at the expense of the lives of the residents and their properties.
