Exams leakage: WAEC has risen to the occasion – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has hailed the West African Examination Council(WAEC) for managing incidence of exams malpractices in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination(BECE).

The 2016 BECE recorded no complaints of leakages of examination questions. The five-day examination was conducted under tight security from the Ghana Police Service and the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).

The President who had expressed worry with the growing trend of exams leakages in the country asked WAEC to ensure it protected its integrity and put its house in order vis a vis the problem.

But Mr. Mahama in an address during the 70th anniversary ceremony of Aburi Girls Senior Girls Saturday said :“I’m pleased also to note that WAEC has risen to the occasion to deal with the shameful examination malpractices that have plagued examinations over the past several years. This year, I am proud to note that our BECE examinations have passed with no incidence recorded.”

Meanwhile President Mahama is predicting Ghana’s youth literacy rate to hit a 100% threshold within the next decade.

He announced that youth literacy grew from 64.8% in the 2005/2006 academic year to 88.5% in the 2012/2013 academic year.

“Youth literacy, which used to be 55.8% in 98/99 went up to 64.8% in the 2005/2006 academic year and has recorded a huge jump to 88.5% in the 2012/2013 academic year. We expect that over the next decade, we should achieve a 100% youth literacy,” he added.
