Ex-Police Officer Kills Taxi Driver

AN EX-POLICE officer, Alex Obiri Yeboah whose recklessness behind the wheel led to the death of a 34 year old taxi driver has been arrested by the Abura Dunkwa police command.

Yeboah allegedly tried to overtake three vehicles including an articulated truck but collided with the taxi cab with registration number GW 7593 Q, killing Isaac Mensah on the spot.

Briefing DAILY GUIDE, Abura Dunkwa District Police Commander, DSP Bernard Twum Barima said on June 22, 2012 around 2:30pm, Obiri Yeboah was driving a Nissan pick-up with registration number GN 2834-12 with one passenger on board from Kumasi towards Takoradi.

He said on reaching Kobiagya near Nyankumasi Ahenkro, Obiri Yeboah decided to overtake an articulated truck ahead of him in a sharp curve.

He stated in the course of the overtaking, he met two oncoming vehicles with the registration numbers CR 1574 Z and GW 3042-11, but they both managed veer off to avoid a collision. The cab driver was however unlucky as the pick-up collided with his vehicle.

The police commander noted the taxi driver sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Abura Dunkwa Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He advised drivers to be careful while overtaking especially long vehicles such as buses and articulated trucks. In another development, a Kia Rio with registration number GR 1335-10 has been involved in an accident at the same spot.

According to DSP Twum Barima, no casualty was recorded but during interrogation the driver claimed he had been driving for eight hours and was very tired at the time of the accident.

He advised drivers not to drive for more than eight hours a day.
