Ex-convict jailed 20 years for threat of death

Kumasi, July 15, GNA – A 31-year old driver and an ex-convict has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court for threatening to kill the wife and two children.

Bright Kwadwo Atakora pleaded not guilty to the offence.

Police Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour-Kyei told the court presided over by Mr Justice Emmanuel Amoh-Yartey that Paulina Kankam, a trader has been living with the convict and their two children at Deduako, a suburb of Kumasi.

Following the refusal by Atakora to give in to persistent demands by the woman that he performed the customary marriage rites, she walked out of the relationship.

The prosecution said on June 4 this year at about 0500 hours, the convict traced Paulina to her family house at Ayigya, where he threatened to kill her and the two children for stealing his money, a claim she profusely denied.

Fearing for her life and that of her kids she made a formal report to the police, who arrested him.

Atakora kept repeating the threat anytime he saw the woman at the police station. He is also being investigated by the KINUST police for a similar offence.
