Ewurabena Aubynn has officially taken the oath of office as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, despite a walkout by the Minority in Parliament on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
The ceremony, presided over by Speaker Alban Bagbin, went ahead as scheduled after tensions arose in the chamber. The disagreement began when Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, requested to make a statement prior to the swearing-in. However, this was met with an objection from Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who insisted that any concerns could be addressed after the oath was administered.
Speaker Bagbin sided with the Majority Leader and ruled that the ceremony should proceed. Unhappy with the decision, Annoh-Dompreh declared, “Mr. Speaker, we cannot be part of this swearing-in,” before leading Minority MPs out of the chamber.
Undeterred by the absence of the Minority, Parliament continued with the swearing-in process. Aubynn, who recently won the by-election, took the oath amid applause from members of the Majority side and other dignitaries present.
Aubynn’s induction increases the Majority’s numerical strength and is expected to bolster the passage of key legislative agendas in the coming months.
The ceremony follows her victory in the close contest in a rerun on Friday, July 11, 2025, in 19 polling stations following a prolonged dispute over the December 2024 results.
She secured 34,090 votes against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie’s 33,881.
Her victory has increased the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary tally to 185 seats.
Meanwhile, four independent MPs — Kwame Asare Obeng (A Plus) of Gomoa Central, Worlasi Kpeli of Afram Plains North, Nandaya Yaw Stanley of Wulensi, and Ohene Kwame Frimpong of Asante Akim North — have declared support for the NDC, giving the party a two-thirds majority in Parliament.
