Ewes in America establish scholarship scheme

Professor Daniel Amenumey of the Department of History, University of Cape Coast on Wednesday called on District Assemblies and Traditional Authorities in the Volta Region to invest part of their District Assemblies’ Common Fund (DACF) and royalties, respectively, in education.

He said such a move would enable brilliant but poor students in the region to pursue further education adding: Unless we invest in education in the region, we would be left behind.”

Professor Amenumey was speaking at a scholarship award ceremony for 12 brilliant but needy students, who excelled in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at Ho.

The Council of Ewe Association of North America (CEANA) instituted the 12,000 dollar-scholarship scheme.

He said the quality of education in the region “is falling and unless something is done about it, the region would be losing quality human resource”.

Dr Samuel Oklu, President of CEANA, said the award was part of the association’s effort to revive the falling standard of education in the region.

He said the number of beneficiaries would be increased in future to enable more pupils to benefit.
