EU Commissioner expresses confidence in Ghana’s future

Accra, June 22, GNA – The European Union (EU) Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Mr Louis Michele, on Friday expressed confidence in Ghana’s future, saying it was bright and promising. Ghana is an example in Africa in all fields. It is showing the way forward in good governance and democracy, he said, when he paid a courtesy call on President John Agyekum Kufuor at the Castle, Osu, in Accra. He also lauded the country’s leadership in efforts at bringing peace to trouble spots on the continent. “We are proud of you”, the Commissioner added.

President Kufuor said Ghana appreciated its relations with the EU, noting that the Union had been supportive of the country’s development, especially the provision of infrastructure like education and water. He, however, said the EU would have to do more to help the nation to attract the needed economic partnerships to sustain its pacesetter role in Africa. He said what Ghana was looking for was partnerships underpinned by genuine mutual respect. President Kufuor praised Mr Michele for serving Europe very well, describing him as a great public servant. He said in the modern world where the regional blocs were being built as vital pillars of globalisation, Europe was fortunate to have him.
