Funsi (U/W), Aug. 23 GNA – Mr Godfrey B. Tanguj, Wa Municipal Chief Executive, has on the occasion of the inauguration of the newly created Wa East District at Funsi appealed to the three ethnic groups in the District to endeavour to live in peace and unity at all times in order to advance the socio-economic development of the new District. He said no meaningful development could take place in any society that was plagued with disputes, chieftaincy land, religious or political conflicts.
Mr Tangu, therefore, urged chiefs and people of the three ethnic groups in the District, Sissala, Wala and Chakala to uphold the peace and promote unity among the people so as to promote development in the area.
Mr Mahami Salifu, Upper East Regional Minister, read the inaugural address on behalf of President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Giving his personal impression on the large turn out of people from all parts of the new District including those resident outside, Mr Salifu said this was a significant evidence of the readiness of the people to take their own destiny into their own hands.
Mr Petro Philemon Ankorle, an Administrative Officer at the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council, was introduced to the chiefs and people as the District Coordinating Director for the District. The 23 assemblymen and women from the area previously serving at the Wa Municipal Assembly, who became members of the new District Assembly, introduced themselves to the Chief and people.
The remaining two new districts of Wa West and Sissala West with their capitals at Wichiau and Gwollu, respectively, would be inaugurated on August 27.
In an address read on behalf of the regent of Funsi, Juoro Braimah Nalayakina Dumah, he expressed the gratitude of the chiefs and people of the district to President Kufuor and his Government for the creation of the District, noting that the inauguration had fulfilled the long cherished dream of the people of the area for a District of their own. He pledged the readiness of his people to co-operate with officials who would be posted to serve in the area.
