Escapee jailed six months

Sekondi Jan.23, GNA – A Circuit Court at Sekondi on Friday jailed Samuel Darko, a 31-year-old man who escaped from the Ekuase Prison Camp near Sekondi to six months imprisonment in hard labour.

Darko, a mason, who pleaded guilty, told the Court that he escaped to enable him to look after his sick wife and pleaded for leniency. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Isaac Nyarko, said the accused was serving four years imprisonment at the Sekondi Central Prison for dishonestly receiving but Darko was transferred to the Ekuase Prison Camp near Sekondi after serving two years of the sentence. Insp Nyarko said at about 1600 hours on May 3, last year, the accused escaped from the Prison Camp.

The prosecutor said an ex-convict who was in the prison with Darko saw the accused at Tarkwa eight months later and alerted the Police. Inspector Nyarko said the police arrested Darko and handed him over to the prison authorities who reported the matter to the police at Sekondi Police.
