Dutch-born winger Ernest Poku, of Ghanaian descent, has completed a long-term move to German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, in a significant step forward in his young career.
The 21-year-old joins from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, where he rose through the club’s youth ranks after joining the academy in 2019. Poku has signed a five-year deal with the German giants and is set to work under former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.
Poku leaves Alkmaar with an impressive record, having contributed 20 goals in all competitions, six goals and 14 assists, including three assists in European fixtures. He made his final appearance for AZ over the weekend, helping the team to a 4-1 victory over Groningen in the Eredivisie opener.
Known for his pace, creativity, and eye for goal, Poku was part of the AZ team that lifted the UEFA Youth League trophy in 2023, a landmark achievement in the club’s history. His development has been closely followed across Europe, and Leverkusen’s move signals strong belief in his potential.
While he has represented the Netherlands at youth international level, Poku remains eligible to play for Ghana, a decision he has yet to make.
