Environment Company launches “trashy Bag”

Accra, Dec. 6, GNA – Gold Coast Projects, a private environmental management company, on Thursday launched a new initiative – trashy bag – as part of broader environmental efforts to find solutions to the serious sanitation problems confronting the country.

Mr. Stuart Gold, Project Director, said it was in line with the company’s objectives of solving sanitation, land pollution and degradation problems that had engulfed the society. This would have serious implications on the fertility of the land in years to come. He said the company employed people to pick sachet bags thrown around by consumers, recycled and reproduced them into bags that could be used for school, travelling and shopping.

Mr. Gold said the company also educated people on the dangers of land pollution and encouraged them to dispose of rubbish responsibly. “This will help to keep our streets and residential areas clean thereby making a more attractive and environment for all of us.” He said so far the company had over 100 people in Accra alone to collect and wash the sachets. An additional 50 hands have been employed to sew and assemble the bags.

Mr. Chris Brealey, Second Secretary of the British High Commission, noted that plastic waste had become a global threat to health and productivity and called for a more integrated approach to solving the problem.

Ms. Sandra Wilson, Project Officer, said dirty streets across the country had become disease-prone areas, which could affect productivity and called for government support to make the project sustainable.
