Engineers & Planners has settled liabilities – SSNIT

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has confirmed that Engineers & Planners Company Limited owned by Ibrahim Mahama, brother of ex-President John Mahama, has settled all its debt.

The mining firm had to be dragged to court over the non-payment of its workers’ social security.

But on Monday, May 1, it dismissed the allegations, revealing it had reached a negotiated agreement with the nation’s pensions management body in 2016 to settle its arrears.

On Tuesday, May 2, the Corporate Affairs Manager of SSNIT, Eva Amegashie, confirmed to TV3 that Engineers & Planners has fulfilled its liabilities.

The court case unravelled how SSNIT payments had not been made from February, 2015 to July, 2015, June, 2016 to August, 2016 and in October, 2016. ENP had contested media reports on the court proceedings, saying the agreement with SSNIT was on December 22, 2016. By the terms of the agreement, ENP was required to make a 12-month-period payment from February, 2017 up to January, 2018.

As of April 28, on the eve of hearing on the case, ENP said it had made a total payment of GH¢2 million. It said SSNIT only wrote to the company on March 2 to announce the abrogation of the agreement as a result of a two-day delay in paying the first installment.

The Accra District Court will continue hearing the case, notwithstanding, on Saturday, May 13.
