Engineers asked to manufacture hand-pump parts locally

Kuntanase (Ash), Sept 3, GNA- A lecturer at the Civil Engineering Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has asked the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University and the polytechnics to manufacture hand-pump parts to benefit communities who depend on hand-pumps for water.

Mr Oduro Kwarteng was speaking at the end of a two-day workshop organised by the Water and Sanitation Committee (WSC) in collaboration with the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District Assembly for 120 WSC members at Kuntanase.

The workshop was meant to equip members with simple technologies to assist them in the management and maintenance of hand-pumps to ensure sustainability of water delivery in the communities.

Dr Jeophrey Anornu, a lecturer at the department, advised participants to reduce cost of operations and maintenance. Miss Janet Gyamfua Amonoo, Senior Mass Education Officer of the Department of Community Development, said if sanitation facilities and water sources were properly managed, it would help curb most water borne diseases such as diarrhoea, dysentery, typhoid fever and bilharzias.
