Accra, Oct. 3, GNA – The Government has released 1.2 billion cedis for the implementation of an Energy Management Project under which 20-government office buildings would be retrofitted to improve their energy efficiency. The project, the first of its kind in Ghana under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, would be coordinated and supervised by the Environmental Protection Agency.
A statement issued from the Energy Foundation and signed by Mr Ernest Asare, Director of Communication and Marketing in Accra on Friday, said the project, to be completed in five months, would save the government about 1.24 billion cedis per year in electricity cost. The statement said the government offered 136,000 dollars as its contribution for the purchase of equipment and materials whiles the Government of Netherlands also contributed 280,000 dollars.
On September 18, last year, both governments signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the Project. The statement said the Project dubbed “improving end-use energy efficiency in public building” would improve useful time of lighting, control for air conditioning in public buildings and reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions.
