Empower local contractors with award of contracts – Union

Accra, Feb. 11, GNA – The National Executive Committee of Construction and Building Materials Workers’ Union (CBMWU) of Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) has appealed to government to empower local contractors with the award of contracts to expand and grow financially to sustain them.

Mr Pius Kweku Quainoo, General Secretary of CBMWU who made the appeal in an interview with Ghana News Agency on Wednesday, said when local contractors were awarded contracts, it would save the country foreign exchange paid to foreign contractors. He attributed the poor quality of work by local contractors to lack of experience and mode of award of contracts adding their performance could be improved when empowered.

Mr Quainoo noted that lack of knowledge about employment contracts with labour had made most contractors unable to provide social protection to their workers.
