Eminent conservationist laid to rest

Buabeng (B/A), Jan. 25, GNA – Burial took place at Buabeng in Brong Ahafo at the weekend, of the late Mr. Daniel Kwaku Akowuah, an eminent conservationist and caretaker of Buabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary in the Nkoranza District.

The late Akowuah, 70, is remembered for the pioneering role he played in the establishment of the Monkey Sanctuary as he single-handedly tamed the animals and brought them closer to humans. The funeral attracted hundreds of mourners including Nana Kwadwo Seinti, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister and his Deputy Mr. Yaw Adjei-Duffour, Captain Nkrabea Effah Dartey (rtd), MP for Berekum, Mr. Kwame Ampofo-Twumasi, MP for Nkoranza South and Mr. Adjei Yeboah, Presiding Member of the Nkoranza District Assembly.

Mr. Akowuah, a retired trained teacher was appointed the first Game Warden of the Monkey Sanctuary and through his untiring efforts helped to market it to attain international status as a viable tourist project. As a politician, the late conservationist was a staunch member of the New Patriotic Party and was the secretary of the Nkoranza North Constituency branch of the party.

He played a leading role in the campaign trail of Mr. Eric Amoateng, MP for Nkoranza North in the last elections and was commended by Mr. Abdulai, Constituency Chairman and Mr. Simon Ameyaw, Constituency Organizer in a tribute at the funeral.

The late Mr. Akowuah, who died at the Saint Theresa’s Hospital on December 19, last year after a short illness, left behind a wife, Madam Elizabeth Agyeiwaa and 14 children.
