Emergence of marijuana smoking joints disturbing the peace in Agona Swedru

Several “Wee” or marijuana selling joints have emerged at some points of the Agona Swedru Municipality and this is creating concerns for the residents in the area.

Nana Esieni II, Nifahene of Swedruman Council of Chiefs, said this at a three-day workshop on drug abuse for selected youth organizations at Agona Swedru of the Central Region.

The workshop was organized by the Agona West Municipal directorate of the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) and Own Your Future project, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) and sponsored by the German government.

Nana Esieni II said these marijuana selling centers could be found at Swedru Mahodwe, Dwenho, Yaabem, Managose, Babianiha, Otabilkrom, Pipe Tank, Wuraba Estate and banks of Akora River.

He said the nefarious activities of these drug peddlers have made it impossible for some residents of these areas to pass through certain parts of Agona Swedru during the periods of 19.00 hours and 20.00 hours.

The Nifahene said that if an innocent person attempts to pass through these areas very late in the evening, she or he would lose his or her mobile phone, hand bags and other valuable items to these criminals.

Nana Esieni appealed to the Inspector General of Police to support police personnel at Agona Swedru and also help complete the abandoned offices and accommodations for them to operate efficiently to deal with these criminals.

Mrs. Augustina Akosua Akumanyi, Deputy Commissioner Operations of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), said the workshop was aimed at empowering the participants to learn more about effects of drug abuse.

The Deputy Commissioner of Operations charged the youth to desist from drug abuse and ensure that Ghana remains peaceful before, during and after 2012 elections.

She cautioned the youth not to allow political leaders to induce them through money and other gift to cause mayhem in the country.

Mr. Kwame Acguah, Agona West Municipal Director of NCCE, said Agona Swedru is classified as one of the most notorious places for narcotic drug transit point and appealed to the Assembly members, chiefs and opinion leaders to help in the crusade against drug abuse.
