Elevate Jomoro District to Municipality – participants urge gov’t

Participants at a day’s forum on the dissemination of the 2010 National Population and Housing Census (PHC) Report in the Jomoro District, have appealed to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, to elevate the district to a Municipality, to enhance its rapid development.

According to the participants, who were mostly chiefs, opinion leaders and assembly members, the current population of the district is 150,107, which is over and above the 95,000 population requirement for a Municipality.

The forum was organized by the Ghana Statistical Service, in collaboration with the Jomoro District Assembly.

It came to light at the forum that the Jomoro District is third in population in the Western Region, after Sekondi-Takoradi and Prestea-Huni Valley, which have populations of 559,548 and 159,304 respectively.

According to the participants, the Jomoro District population is higher than the population of three Municipalities in the Western Region, namely, Nzema East, Tarkwa Nsuaem and Sefwi Wiaso.

They hoped that an additional constituency would be created before the 2016 General Elections, since the current population is too huge for one constituency.

Mr Abudu Amadu, District Co-ordinating Director who chaired the function, said the elevation of Jomoro, will go a long way to accelerate its development.
