Tema The Electricity Corporation of Ghana (ECG) said on Tuesday that electricity tariffs may go up by between 100 and 200 per cent instead of 300 per cent if its proposals for increases are approved early by government. “We are supposed to charge three times what the Volta River Authority (VRA) charges us but we have made some concessions. We are negotiating with government and if the approval is delayed up to September 1997, then the tariffs must go up by 300 per cent to meet operational costs and service debts to enable us operate as a proper business entity”, Mr Christian Tetteh, ECG’s Director of Finance said.
Speaking at separate public forums for industrialists and domestic consumers at Tema Mr Tetteh said the Ministry of Mines and Energy is to present a Regulatory Commission Bill to Parliament when it resumes next month. The Commission which is to consist of the representatives of VRA which supplies power to the ECG, the ECG, industrialists, domestic consumers and other stake-holders, will decide tariffs to be charged by the two institutions.
