Electrician dragged to court for impregnating girl, 15

A 24-year-old electrician, Michael Adjei, has been put before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly impregnating a 15-year-old pupil who lives in the same vicinity with him.

The suspect was arraigned before a court presided over by Abena Agyin-Doku and charged with defilement of a girl under the age of 16 and he pleaded not guilty.

He has been remanded on the order of the trial judge while the case has been adjourned to December 2015.

The facts of the case as presented by the prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector Kofi Atimbire, are that the complainant is a wielder and uncle to the victim.

According to him, the victim resides with her aunty at Dome, a suburb of Accra.

He said the accused person is a 24-year-old electrician who resides in the same area with the victim and her aunty at Dome.

On November 12, 2015 at about 6:00pm, the prosecutor noted, the sister of the complainant informed him that their niece had been impregnated by the suspect.

Furthermore, he stated that the complainant, upon hearing the information, inquired from the victim who said the electrician had carnal knowledge of her on September 18, 2015.

In addition, the police officer said the suspect was consequently confronted and he admitted that he indeed had sexual intercourse with the girl.

Explaining further, he said the matter was reported to the Tesano division of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), saying that the victim was given a form to attend hospital for medical examination and treatment by DOVVSU.

The prosecuting officer said after examination, the report which was submitted on the victim indicated that she was seven weeks pregnant so the suspect was subsequently arrested.

He said during interrogation the suspect admitted the offence and said he also defiled the victim on October 31, 2015. He was dragged to court after police concluded investigations.
