Electrical re-wiring of old buildings must be a priority – Reroy CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of Reroy Cables Limited Mrs. Kate Quartey-Papafio has called for a national electrical re-wiring programme to minimise the spate of fire outbreaks in the country. She explained that the re-wiring initiative should be focused on old buildings especially those that have existed beyond 25 years. It should however not be limited to only government buildings but other corporate and residential buildings.
“The time for replacing electrical wiring has come looking at the recent fire outbreaks. Electric wiring has limited lifespan which we often ignored at our own detriment. Experts suggest we replace wiring systems after 20-25 years but this has never been a concern until recent development. We don’t have to wait for a major disaster that could cause loss of several lives before we take action or make this a national priority,” indicated Mrs. Quartey-Papafio.
She revealed that conditions of electrical wires deteriorate over time and once they remain in use beyond their lifespan they become disasters waiting to happen. “Unfortunately we always focus on renovations with respect to architectural designs or structure forgetting that we also have to do some re-wiring considering new appliances or gadgets to be used”, noted CEO of Reroy Cables Limited.
Mrs. Kate Quartey-Papafio advised that only certified or qualified electricians be considered for such crucial exercise since they are in the best position to tell which electrical wires are best depending on the nature of the building and possible electrical appliances in use.
