Akyem Awisa (E/R), May 23, GNA – Nana Apeaning Kwafoamoa II, Krontihene of Awisa, at the weekend commissioned a 22-million cedi electric propelled borehole fitted with 1,000 gallons of water tank for the Akyem Awisa Community, in the Brim South District of the Eastern Region.
The project, which started three months ago was donated by the Tema based Awisa-Apaaso Citizens Association (AACA), to help reduce the incidence of Water-borne diseases in the area.
There were other four similar boreholes at the drilling stage and when completed would also provide uninterrupted safe potable water for the entire 5,000 populace of the twin-town.
Mrs. Paulina Agyei Maafo, Treasurer of the association and Mr. Kennedy Kwasi Nyarko, assembly member for the area, assisted the Krontihene to cut a tap to commission the project. In a brief address, Nana Kwafoamoa commended the association for its initiative and pledged the community’s commitment to support on-going projects with communal labour in the twin-town.
He called on non-resident citizens abroad to emulate the association by contributing their quota towards the inhabitant’s quest for social amenities. He pledged to donate a 1,000-gallon poly-tank. Rev. Issac Benzes rpt Benzes Okoree, Secretary of AACA, who earlier handed over the project to the community stated that the association would continue to assist in the general development projects in order to help improve the living conditions of the people.
Rev. Okoree who did not hide his feelings about lack of time consciousness of the people, expressed the need for attitudinal change if the community was to attain its developmental aspirations. He urged the people to discard the attitude of self-centeredness, which was creeping into the fabric of society, adding: “We have travelled all the way from Tema only to meet few members of the community who are expected to receive the project”.
The Secretary advised the project committee members to inculcate in them the habit of maintenance, so as to prolong the life span of the borehole. “They should also ensure that token rates collected on the project, would be utilized for the collective benefit of the people”. Rev. Okoree said the association had previously contributed towards Education Endowment Fund and provision of television sets to the town’s Methodist, Presbyterian and Salvation Army Junior Secondary Schools, adding; “We intend to offer scholarships to brilliant but needy students”. He said plans were far advanced to construct a clinic and a community centre with residential block attached, to enhance health delivery system and entertainment respectively. The Secretary called for love and unity among Ghanaians, especially at a time that the nation was celebrating its Golden Jubilee.
