Election Day security will be tight – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has said his government has not taken the decision to ban social media on Election Day.

According to him, the Police Service is weighing the options with regards to the benefits or the defects of the ban on elections day.

The President said he believes in the capacity of the Ghana Police Service to manage the country’s security before, during and after the 2016 elections.

He made the comment when he officially opened GLOBAL FM, via the phone, on the sidelines of the maiden graduation of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS).

He noted that the Police Service was setting up a cyber security division that would be able to track social media and bring serious accountability to its users.

“Global FM is a refreshing addition to broadcasting in the Volta region, and I have the belief that, it will go far and compete with the old stations,” President Mahama said.

Interior Minister, Prosper Bani, was at the station to officially cut the tape for the start of operations.

Those who graced the occasion are; Francis Ganyalo, Deputy Regional Minister, the Member of Parliament for Ho, Kofi Attoh, Prince Derek Adjei, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Youth Enterprise Support (YES) and the District Chief Executive of Akatsi North, James Gunu.

Others include John Gyapong Cudjoe, Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), MCE for Ketu South, Pascal Lamptey, Regional NDC secretary, Simon Amegashie Viglo, Godwin Avenorgbo and Dr. Kobby Mensah of the University of Ghana Business School.
