Election 2016: Voting underway

Voting is underway in some polling centres in the 275 constituencies across Ghana as the country elects a new president and members of parliament for the next four years.

Some centres are, however, yet to start voting.

Scores of voters queued up at dawn in anticipation of voting early.

Some voters were seen in queues as early as midnight. Some of them were also holding queue spots for their family members.

There are seven main candidates in the presidential race including President John Mahama of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) who is seeking re-election for a second and final four-year term.

His main contender in the race is Nana Akufo-Addo of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) who is having a third go at the presidency.

The rest are former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Iovr Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Dr Edward Mahama of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Dr Papap Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and independent candidate Jacob Osei Yeboah.
