Elect ‘winnable’ candidates – Nana Addo tells NPP delegates

Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appealed to delegates of Saturday’s parliamentary primaries to elect candidates who will ensure that the party gets a majority in the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

The country’s largest opposition party will elect its parliamentary candidates for the 2016 elections on Saturday, June 13.

The elections will be held nationwide across at least 260 constituencies.

In his statement on Wednesday to wish candidates and delegates well, Nana Addo appealed to delegates to “exhibit a sense maturity and unity of purpose” ahead of the primaries.

“It is my expectation that the elections will be transparent, and held in accordance with the Constitution and regulations of our party and the laws governing the conduct of pubic elections in our country.”

Six constituencies namely Bia East, Bia West, Juaboso, Akontombra, Nadowli-Kaleo and Nkwanta South have been exempted from the primaries.

The elections will be the final internal contest within the party ahead of next year’s general elections.

“I urge delegates, in their choice of parliamentary candidates, to elect ‘winnable’ candidates who can win their seats and help deliver an NPP majority in the next Parliament.

“These candidates should also be the ones who can work hard to ensure an NPP victory in the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections.”
