Elect competent Assembly Members for new Districts – JAK

Wechiau (UWR), Oct. 19, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor on Tuesday appealed to the chiefs and people of the newly created Wa West District to elect competent assemblymen and women to govern the District for the development of the area.

He said if there was no responsible and competent assembly members, resources allocated for development would not be well utilised. President Kufuor said the Government would ensure that a competent District Chief Executive was appointed to man the new District for an effective and efficient administration.

He made this appeal at Wechiau in the newly created Wa West District when he addressed a durbar of chiefs as part of his three-day tour of the Region.

President Kufuor said as a district capital, the people of Wechiau had a legal entitlement to basic amenities such as potable water, good roads, electricity and other means of communication, but charged them to remain committed to their goals.

He gave the assurance that the Government would provide them with a quality senior secondary school and would develop the Hippopotamus Sanctuary to attract tourists.

Naa Danyagiri Walamani, Tokali Naa, who read the welcoming address on behalf of the other chiefs of the area appealed to the Government to consider providing them with electricity and effective communication system.

He commended the Government for providing them with a separate district, which they had longed for since 30 years ago.

“Your Government has actually demonstrated its support for decentralisation, which brings about grassroots democracy by trying to satisfy all areas of the country with their heartfelt desires,” he emphasised.

Naa Walamani also commended President Kufuor for promising to upgrade the Wechiau Health Centre to a District Hospital.
