Ejected Squatters attack Policemen

Accra, April 19, GNA – Aggrieved ejected squatters of Redco Flats at Madina, near Accra, on Sunday attacked a group of Policemen stationed at the Flats.

The attackers numbering about 30 and wielding cutlasses and a locally manufactured gun threw stones at the residence of the Policemen. Eyewitnesses told the GNA that two Policemen went to the Madina Market to eat and while there, one Burger, a former squatter at the Flats, accosted them and warned that he would deal with them.

They said a scuffle ensued between Burger and the Policemen and they overpowered him and sent him to the Madina Police Station.

A friend of Burger allegedly went and mobilised about 30 others to launch the attack on the residence of Police Officers at the Flats but the Policemen, who fired their AK 47 riffles, repulsed them. Seven Policemen sustained various degrees of injury while Samuel Samad, a Squatter, was shot in the thigh.

Five of the attackers have been arrested and placed in Police custody at the Madina District Police Headquarters. The wounded have been sent to hospital.

The Madina Police confirmed the incident to the GNA. 19 April 04
