Eight out of 26 women win election in Mfantseman

Saltpond (C/R), Oct. 4, GNA – Eight out of the 26 women who contested the recent district level elections in the Mfantseman District won assembly seats.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at Saltpond, Mr Eric Abaka Hagan, District Electoral Officer, described the situation as disappointing, considering the efforts of some organisations and individuals to get more women to participate in local governance.

According to Mr Hagan, Mfantseman was among the districts with the highest number of women candidates. “Women outnumber men in the society and I wonder why they cannot use their numerical strength to dominate elections,” the Electoral Officer stated.

Mr Hagan said elections were conducted in 44 out of the 48 electoral areas, as four candidates were declared unopposed. He described the elections as incident-free and commended the electorate for their comportment.

The Electoral Officer said the greatest “casualties” were the defeat of the Presiding Member of the Assembly, Mr Asamoah Adjei Kusi and the District Finance Officer, Mr Abraham Mensah.

He said unit committee elections were conducted in only eight out of 197 units since the rest of the committees could not raise the required number of candidates to file nominations. Mr Hagan said no candidates filed nomination in 76 units. 5 Oct. 06
