Eight people have been arrested in connection with the deadly clashes in Nkwanta South in Oti Region, which have claimed the lives of three students from Nkwanta Senior High School(SHS) and left others injured.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) John Nchor, Public Affairs Officer for the Oti Regional Police Command confirmed this development in an interview with Accra-based Joy News.
DSP Nchor assured that there is security reinforcement in Nkwanta and its environs to bring the situation under control.
“As I speak, calm has been restored in Nkwanta following the recent violent incidents. Swift and decisive actions have been taken to maintain law and order,” DSP Nchor said.
He noted that increased patrols and newly established checkpoints have been deployed across the region as part of enhanced security efforts to prevent further attacks and safeguard affected communities.
The clash, which has been attributed to renewed tribal conflict began on Thursday, 26 June, claiming the lives of two female day students — both General Arts students in Forms Two and Three respectively.
A male Business student in Form Three was also killed by a stray bullet while seated in his classroom during mock examinations on Friday.
In response to the situation, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has shut down the school and arranged police escorts to ensure students can return home safely.
The Ministry of Education has extended its condolences to the bereaved families and pledged to continue monitoring the situation to safeguard students, staff, and school property.
