THE EGLE Party has demanded an immediate explanation from the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the fate of the alliance pact that the two parties forged in 1992 to contest general elections in the country.
“ It is the hope and prayer of the EGLE Party that before the holding of its national delegates congress scheduled for December 28, the NDC will come clear on its position on the alliance that our two parties entered into to contest parliamentary and presidential elections ,” it said.
This was the outcome of an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party in Accra on Wednesday.
The NEC said it is proper and fitting that the leadership of the NDC discusses the issue very thoroughly with the EGLE Party “since it touches on the sensibilities of our rank and file.
“We had anticipated that the leadership of the NDC which we have carried on our backs for the past eight years would have found it prudent to discuss with us the dicey question of the alliance before the conduct of the party’s national delegates congress,” they said.
According to the NEC, “ if the NDC feels that the EGLE Party is now an unwanted appendage or is waiting prior to the holding of the next elections before it finds it necessary to approach us , it should be bold and frank to tell us”.
The NEC also called on the NDC to consider a possible merger with the EGLE Party and the Democratic People’s Party (DPP) to contest future polls.
“If this development is not going to be possible, then, the EGLE Party will have the option of extricating ourselves from the apron strings [of the NDC] and undertake a massive exercise to revitalise our structures in preparation towards the next general elections,” the NEC said.
It said the party will advise itself within the shortest practicable time if the NDC fails to avail itself with the various options the EGLE Party has offered it.
“The EGLE Party can no longer wait for even the next two weeks; the leadership and the rank and file will decide the fate of the party if the NDC fails to state its position clearly on the alliance issue,” the NEC said.
