Effective legal system, a must for rule of law – A-G

Accra, March 8, GNA – Mr Ayikoi Otoo, Minister of Justice and Attorney- General on Tuesday underscored the need for an effective legal system to ensure the success of rule of law.

To this end, he said, government ought to provide the judiciary with adequate resources to dispense justice in an impartial manner. Mr Otoo made the call at the official launch of activities marking the 46th Annual Law Week celebration of the Ghana School of Law (GSL) in Accra.

The weeklong programme is under the theme: “Thirteen Years of Constitutional Rule, Challenges For The Rule of Law.”

The A-G described the period of military rule in the country as the “Era of Nepotism”, and expressed regret that, separation of powers was alien to military regimes.

Mr Otoo stated that in the 1990s, military nepotism gave way to constitutional rule and the rule of law in the country, and said it was gratifying to note that the practice of rule of law had come of age, thus making positive strides in our constitutional dispensation. Turning to crime, Mr Otoo noted that it posed a big threat to the existence of constitutional rule and the rule of law.

He, therefore, urged government to improve the service conditions of the security agencies to help nib in the bud the activities of criminals.

The A-G tasked the government to put in place measures that would bring about favourable conditions for a stable democratic society. Mr Wisdom Seneadza, President of the Students’ Representative Council of GSL, urged the authorities to provide the school with residential accommodation,
