Economy is not in dire situation – Gov’t

Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur says data available to government do not support the dire economic situation being put out by international rating agencies such as UK-based Fitch.

He described as dramatic some of the statements from the agencies on the economy and that government is willing to share with them measures taken to address the challenges.

In an interview with Radio Ghana at the Flagstaff House, the Vice President was optimistic that the economy will soon recover from the challenges.

Vice President Amissah-Arthur said the full report on the National Economic Forum held last month at Senchi in the Eastern Region has been ready for about two weeks now.

It has however not yet been presented to President Mahama and the public because the organisers are waiting for the final comments from some of the facilitators and chairpersons.

He said the sudden death of P.V. Obeng was also a factor because as Chairman of the NDPC, the forum mandated the commission to incorporate the Senchi Consensus into the Ghana Shared Growth and Development Agenda Two, expected to be presented to Parliament for further debate and approval.

Vice President Amissah-Arthur said by next week the final report on the Senchi Consensus will be ready.

On the absence of the NPP at the forum, Vice President Amissah-Arthur said government will be looking at the issues raised by the NPP and if they are critical to help the economy, it will be incorporated into government’s measures, saying no one person is a repository of knowledge.
