Economic hardship caused my defeat – Mark Woyongo

The defeated Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Mark Owen Woyongo, has attributed his loss in the just ended polls to the hardships under the Mahama-led administration.

Mr. Woyongo lost his reelection bid to parliament during last week’s presidential and parliamentary polls.

He polled 17,203 votes representing 43.89% of the valid votes cast as against Joseph Kofi Addah’s 20,667 votes representing 52.72%.

Speaking Tuesday on the Ultimate FM’s Breakfast show, the former Interior Minister said the NDC government’s failure to the fulfill promises it made to the electorate gravely affected its electoral fortunes and his reelection bid.

“There were some of the policies, national in character that cost me the election. Increased in electricity tariffs and the general economic hardship aside the fact that my party executives did not work well to seal the victory,” he told Lantam Papanko, host of the Ultimate Breakfast show.

President John Mahama and the ruling NDC were defeated in last week’s presidential and parliamentary polls by the New Patriotic Party led by Nana Akufo-Addo.

The NPP trashed the ruling party by about one million votes and also won majority of the parliamentary seats.

The veteran politician polled 5,716,026 votes representing 53.85% in the 2016 elections to give him an edge over the ruling National Democratic Congress leader Mahama, who garnered 4,713,277 votes representing 44.40% of the total votes.
