ECG releases $500,000 for training of engineering students

Kumasi, May 15, GNA – The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has voted 500,000 Dollars for the training of Electrical and Computer Engineering Students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Mr. Jude Adu-Amankwah, Managing Director of ECG, who disclosed this, said the donation was informed by the crucial role the students played in industry and the nation’s socio-economic development. He said that the money would be spread over a period of three years and that the ECG would use 140,000 Dollars out of the amount for the establishment of an ultra-modern high voltage laboratory this year. Mr. Adu-Amankwah was speaking at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between authorities of KNUST and officials of ECG in Kumasi.

Professor Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa, Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, signed on behalf of the University whilst Mr. Adu-Amankwah signed on behalf of ECG.

Under the terms of agreement, ECG would assist in the reinforcement of power supply to the KNUST and would ensure periodic inspection and testing of electrical installations. The company would also provide support services such as part time teaching, consultancy services and practical training of staff and students.

Mr. Adu-Amankwah said for the administration of the MoU, the Provost of the College of Engineering shall be the contact person for the KNUST whilst the ECG Managing Director shall be the contact person for the company and the MoU shall be in force for three years. Prof. Adarkwah said that the KNUST shall release land to the company on its campus to enable the company to build a district office for residence within the catchment area of the university. He said the company shall have the right to install its equipment on the land.

Prof. Adarkwah thanked the ECG for its efforts at assisting the students.
