Consumers of electricity in the Kumasi area who default in the settlement of their bills will face legal action from this week when the ECG embarks on a new measure to recover its monies.
The new measure was announced by the Ashanti regional manager of the company, Mr. William Hutton Mensah, in an interview, during which he added that out of a total of 110,000 consumers in the Kumasi metropolis only 30,000 settle their bills promptly with the rest owing some C35 billion.
The manager said since VRA is demanding its dues from them it is necessary to use all means possible to recover their debts from consumers.
In spite of the debts, the company is improving upon its services to meet the standards set by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission. To this end he said the company has put finishing touches to the installation of a 33 KV SF6 circuit breaker at Aboabo, a suburb of Kumasi. This he said would arrest the problem of low voltages in the metropolis.
Areas earmarked for upgrading include Ayigya, Zongo, Anwam, Dagomba Line, Sisankyi, Mbrom, Bohyen, Nkontwima, Breman-West, Santasi, Adum Central and Breman New York.
