Ho, Aug. 27, GNA – The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has defended the disconnection of defaulting consumers in the Volta Region, owing amounts as low as 5,000 cedis as a purely business operations and not heavy handedness.
Mr Felix Fiebor, the Regional Director of the ECG, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), at Ho, said the exercise was an attempt to encourage consumers to pay their bills no matter how low.
He said almost 50 per cent of the estimated 80,000 consumers in the Region fell within the concessionary lifeline bracket. He explained that this category consumed from 0-50 units, for each monthly billing cycle and paid about 13,000 cedis.
Mr Fiebor complained about the tendency of some consumers, to settle just a small fraction of their huge bills, adding that the argument that the ECG’s insistence on the payment of the full reconnection fee of 45,000 cedis even when the debt to be settled was low was not tenable. He said the Region had a weekly revenue target of 1.4 billion cedis to be met.
