ECG disconnects Ghana Water Limited over GH¢999.6m debt

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected Ghana Water Limited (GWL) from the national power grid over a debt of GH¢999.6 million.

The disconnection occurred on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, as part of ECG’s ongoing nationwide revenue mobilisation.

The exercise, which started on Monday, June 16, 2025, is aimed at recovering debts owed by state institutions and private entities to stabilise ECG’s financial health.

The task force, which carried out the operation, indicated that GWL was given ample notice to settle its arrears but failed to do so.

Also, the team proceeded to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), which was also disconnected from the national grid over a GH¢3.15 million debt.

ECG said GBC had defaulted on a structured payment plan agreed upon earlier, prompting the disconnection.

Meanwhile, GWL has been given a 48-hour ultimatum to either settle its debt or propose an acceptable payment plan.
