ECG defaulters to face court action

Agona Swedru, April 9, GNA – The Defaulters of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Agona Swedru District owing 2. 6 billion cedis are to be arraigned before court and made to pay an interest of 25 percent of the amount owed.

Alhaji Daudi Jangu, Central Regional Director of the Company, disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview after a strategic planning meeting with all the 13 District Managers in the Region at Agona Swedru.

He warned people who had illegally connected electricity to their houses, shops and stores to desist from the act before they were caught because it denied the company of revenue. Alhaji Jangu said the Company was to publish the names of defaulters and those caught in connection with illegal connection in the dailies. The Regional Director told the GNA that a team from the Company would mobilised from Cape Coast, Assin Fosu, Saltpond, Ajumako, Dunkwa-on Offin, and other districts to Agona Swedru, Winneba and Kasoa simultaneously on an exercise of mass disconnection of defaulters to retrieve millions of cedis.

He said the team would make house-to-house disconnections to enable the company collect ECG’s debts to enable it to render quality service and extend power to other areas in the region.

Mr Bismark Awuku, Swedru Area Manager, expressed concern about the non-payment of bills by customers and urged them to settle their bills promptly.

He said the Swedru Area of the Company had to pay 500 million cedis a week to the Regional Headquarters in Cape Coast to enable the Company to extend power supply to new areas developing in the district especially at the Swedru township. 09 April 06
