A former Director of the Electoral Commission Kwame Dammoah Agyemang has urged the EC to revoke the license of political parties who fail to meet the deadline for the submission of audited accounts.
The Electoral Commission is asking all parties to submit audited accounts by end of March.
The exercise by the EC will allow it to monitor the cash flow of the political parties ahead of the elections in November.
In an interview with Starr News, Mr. Agyeman said the political parties who have failed to render accounts over the years may be breaking the law.
“They are only hoping that one day the state would fund political parties and they would be the beneficiaries that is why some of them are staying on the books.
“The law forbids foreign funding and it looks some of the parties are getting funding from foreigners and to disclose this would be a big problem for them…so they might be hiding such sources of funding that is why they cannot render accounts…they [EC] should start from now and revoke their license.”
Programs officer for the Center for Democratic Development Paul Aborampah as also advised the EC to use the opportunity to weed out redundant political parties on its register.
