EC to announce successful presidential nominees today

The Electoral Commission will today announce the number of disqualified candidates who have managed to qualify for the December polls, after being given the opportunity to correct errors in their nomination forms.

So far, nine candidates are on record to have submitted their revised forms after the commission pointed out a huge amount of mistakes in their individual forms.

The parties who successfully submitted their forms include Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom’s Progressive People’s Party, (PPP), National Democratic Party (NDP), All People’s Congress (APC), People’s National Convention (PNC), and the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP).

The rest are Independent candidate Asiedu Walker, United Progressive Party (UPP), United Front Party (UFP), and the People’s National Convention (PNC).

The candidates were disqualified in October by the EC after anomalies were detected in their nomination forms.

After several suits against the EC by some of the affected candidates, an Accra High Court ruled that the EC extend the nomination period and allow the candidates who were disqualified to correct the errors on their forms.

The EC petitioned that ruling at the Supreme Court but the apex court dismissed EC’s suit.

According to the ruling delivered by a seven-member panel of the Supreme Court, the election management body must extend the nomination period to November 8 [Today] and allow the candidates to correct their mistakes in order to contest the polls.

The court also ordered the discontinuation of the various court cases regarding the disqualification of other presidential aspirants.
