EC suspends GH¢50,000 filing fees

The Electoral Commission says it is no longer accepting the GH¢50,000 filing fees until further notice. The Chairperson of the commission Mrs. Charlotte Osei said the decision was arrived at after being served with a court injunction to that effect.

The Progressive Peoples’ Party sought a court injunction on Wednesday against the GH¢50,000 filing fees which it said was too high. Mrs. Osei announced the suspension on Thursday when the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo filed his forms at the Commission in Accra to contest the 2016 general elections.

Though the party was willing to pay the GH¢50,000, the chairperson of the EC refrained from accepting the banker’s draft, saying she wanted to respect the decision of the court. She said EC officials in all the constituencies have also being informed to receive the nomination forms but should not take money from the aspirants as filing fees for now.
