EC says Asawasi bye-elections to be peaceful

Kumasi, April 19, GNA – Mr Samuel Yorke-Aido0, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), said on Tuesday that arrangements are far advanced for the Asawasi bye-elections to take place successfully on Thursday, April 21.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi, he said indelible ink, ballot papers and boxes and other materials were intact and that they would be distributed to the various polling stations on Thursday at dawn.

The elections became necessary as a result of the death of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament, Dr Adamu Gibiril.

He said the police and other security agencies would be dispatched to the polling stations to ensure peace and order. Mr Yorke-Aidoo said the declaration of the elections depended on how soon the results from the polling centres got to the coalition centre.

He stressed the need for the people to be vigilant and cast their votes early.

A total of 80,315 registered voters are expected to cast their votes in 107 polling stations.

The three contesting candidates are Alhaji Shuaibu Musah Shariff for NPP, Mr Ibrahim Mohammed Issaka for PNC and Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak for the NDC.
