The Electoral Commission (EC) says only 37 students from the University of Ghana, Legon, missed the opportunity to have their names captured on the voter’s register at the end of the recent 10-day limited voters registration exercise.
This contradicts the claims by students and the university authorities that thousands of first time voters had been disenfranchised by the commission due to the limited registration centres created for the institution.
Director of Administration at the EC, Christian Owusu Parry stated on GTV’s Talking Point programme Sunday night that the commission added two more centres which saw many students register before the deadline.
He said at the close of the registration less than 40 people were in queue to register but could not be captured.
According to him, Pentagon Hall had 5, Jubilee Hall had 7, Legon Hall 25, while Wetlands had no one in queue at the end of the exercise.
Mr Parry however, said the commission “will give them the opportunity to register ” in the continuous voter registration exercise.
He indicated the EC “will meet with political party representatives on Tuesday on the modalities of the continuous voter registration”.
