EC forms district inter-party advisory committee

Tepa (Ash), Feb 23, GNA – The Ahafo-Ano North District Electoral Commission (EC) has constituted an Inter-Party Advisory Committee to assist the Commission in its work during the registration exercise. The committee is made up of representatives of the four political parties, which are active in the district, a representative each of the three traditional councils in the district, the police, media and the District Electoral Officer.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the committee at Tepa last Thursday, Mr Kwabena Asante-Boahen, the District Electoral Officer, gave reasons for replacing the current register.

He said the current one was bloated, contained the names of dead people and multiple registrations, whilst some youth, under 18 years had their names in it.

Mr Asante-Boahen also explained the electoral laws on people who qualify to register to them and asked them to also explain to the public not to encourage those who were not qualified, especially aliens and children below 18 years to break the law since anyone found guilty of any of the electoral offences was liable on conviction, to a fine not exceeding one million cedis or imprisonment for two years. He called on the political parties and their agents not to circumvent the electoral laws.

Mr Asante-Boahen also urged the political parties to feel free and report any suspected cases to his office for discussion.
